A very unfortunate case of mild amnesia with 08V11

So... to continue where i left off on Lymphatic systems,
If blood keeps leaving the blood capillaries and become tissue fluid, then the cells and tissues will swell from the water in the tissue fluid that will move into the cells by osmosis. This is NO good.
So, there exists 2 systems in place to absorb fluids back into the system and at the same time to remove waste materials.
1) Venule end of capillaries
2) lymphatic capillaries

Lymphatic capillaries are located near to the blood capillaries. Blood flow is slow as there is no heart at the lymphatic capillaries to provide pumping force. So, lymph inside the lymphatic capillaries move by the action of muscles. (lymphatics are also located near muscles).
Lymph in lymphatics move to the heart eventually (along the way removing the metabolic wastes).
Thus, these 2 systems prevent conditions like oedema.
Oedema can occur in conditions when:
1)Inflammation increases osmotic pressure outside the blood capillaries
2)Increased hydrostatic pressure inside the blood capillaries (for example in heart failure)
3)The permeability of the capillary walls increases in an inflammation which causes more fluid to leave the blood capillary.

That's all!
All the best for the RT!

Circulating... Circulation...So Bloody...!

Hello! HBL.. what is that? Home. Based. Learning!
So in essence, it means that
1) You do this at HOME!
2) You LEARN!

Ok, no DIM DIM, no Bright Bright, no Dark Dark for MISS CHUA's Biology.
So it's just the good old boring misschuabiology.blogspot.com! :)

So what?

1) You may read through my Circulation slides. (Which i will still run through the contents next week when i see you all in person!)
2) See the heart dissection slides. Warning! Not for the faint hearted! :P
3) Attempt the question below. Answer in your Biology notebook. We will go thru in class next week! :)

Question:

If you could re-design the single circulatory system of a fish by re-locating the various blood vessels, would you place the pulmonary arteries and veins before the heart or after it? (In other words, would the blood enter the gills before it enters the heart, or vice versa?)

Explain your choice with reference to how the rate of exchange (between blood and the body’s tissues) and the rate of transport (of blood to various parts of the body) would be affected.
[7 marks]

Ok. Yay! Done! See you all for Cross country tmr!
I will be running! Support me hor! Will try not to faint halfway. keke

New year 2009!

Welcome 08V11 and 08V12!!! 2009, new year, new initiatives.
1) This year on, there will not be any notes given out after each topic. References used for preparations for exams will be your textbooks and handwritten notes taken lessons. Soooo... this means that you have to PAY attention during my lessons ok? :)
2) 2009 syllabus outline and CA1 assessment components will be given during lesson 1 next week.
3) Every Biology student will also have to sign and acknowledge the "laboratory safety" form. (To be given out next week too!)

Next week: Revision on IP1's work. To do practice paper (MCQ+STQ+1 essay)) during lesson. Pls revise! :)

First topic: RESPIRATION.
